Will Pastor Tchividjian allow contemplative speaker at conference hosted by Coral Ridge Presbyterian?

Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3)

The Master’s College has withdrawn as exhibitor, and IHOP-KC contemplative Stephen Venable is apparently no longer on the schedule for the upcoming Linger Conference (featuring John Piper, Matt Chandler, and Tullian Tchividjian).

Yet, the contemplative “christ” continues to rise. Scheduled to speak at the Liberate 2014 Conference Feb. 2o-23 at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church is Steve Brown, radio host and retired seminary teacher, an advocate of contemplative practices.  This was recently covered in Reformed contemplative at Liberate 2014/One Way Love Conference.

Coral Ridge Presbyterian Pastor Tullian Tchividjian is speaking at the Linger Conference, so he is undoubtedly aware of the IHOP-KC contemplative brouhaha, and of The Master’s College cancellation as exhibitor.

Once he learns about Brown’s pro-contemplative history, will Pastor Tchividjian send a strong message about the dangers of contemplative prayer by canceling Brown’s speaking engagement?

In Steve Brown’s book, Approaching God: Accepting the Invitation To Stand In The Presence Of God, he wrote, “One of the ways I have found helpful in moving into the ‘other world’ is a technique called centering prayer (You might want to read M. Basil Pennington’s book on the subject, Centering Prayer. I don’t agree with the entire book, but…”)***

On Steve Brown’s radio show (9-2-11) he interviewed/promoted contemplative Richard Foster and commented, “I read Pennington’s Centering Prayer and started utilizing that and found it very helpful in some ways, and I included it in a book I wrote and people have come at me with a howitzer. They called me New Age, involved in the occult…”

For those who don’t know, centering/contemplative prayer is the same as Eastern and New Age meditation, but it is disguised with a sprinkling of “Christianese.” This practice can affect or determine one’s theology. It is extremely deceptive, and it is flooding into the Body of Christ. Brown is clearly aware of Christians who oppose this anti-biblical activity.

Here are other snippets from Brown’s radio interview with Richard Foster:

“Today, the forgotten art of meditative prayer. Richard Foster is here to give us a lesson in stillness and help us find the sanctuary of the soul.”

“The contemplatives of the church have a childlike quality about them that’s fun.”

“This book is so good it’ll blow you away. Sanctuary of the Soul: Journey Into Meditative Prayer.”

One of the last places people should ever be pointed to is Renovare, [1] the meditative organization founded by Richard Foster. Brown told his radio audience Renovare “is a place you ought to go. …You will rise up and call me blessed for having told you about it.”

You can listen to the entire radio interview Here.
